At the 2024 Tokyo Game Show (TGS), cutting-edge AI technologies took centre stage, reflecting the gaming industry’s increasing integration of artificial intelligence into gameplay and development. AI innovations have been featured across a variety of gaming experiences, from enhancing player interaction to revolutionising game creation.
Phil Spencer welcomed viewers to the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2024 broadcast, expressing gratitude for the ongoing growth of Xbox in Japan. Xbox has seen significant growth in Asia, with the highest number of Xbox console players in the region to date and increasing engagement across all devices. Spencer announced that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, a first-person adventure game, will debut in December 2024. Developed by MachineGames and Lucasfilm, it will be fully localised in Japanese.
TGS 2024 reinforced the gaming industry’s reliance on AI not only for enhancing player interaction but also for game development itself. Tools that generate visual content from text or create lifelike NPC behaviours have started to blur the lines between gameplay and storytelling. One prominent feature presented was AI’s capacity to deliver more immersive virtual reality (VR) experiences.
Ubitus, for instance, introduced new interactive features in VR, where AI avatars could perform actions like fortune-telling or even playing a game of rock-paper-scissors with players, providing a more engaging and personalised VR experience
One of the key highlights was the much-anticipated return of Sony Interactive Entertainment, which showcased the PlayStation 5 Pro. Fans had the opportunity to experience iconic games such as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Gran Turismo 7. Sony’s presence stirred enthusiasm as it had skipped previous TGS events, making its 2024 return highly awaited.
The Tokyo Game Show is demonstrating how AI is rapidly advancing the gaming landscape, providing tools that expand creative possibilities and deepen player engagement. The ability to create lifelike interactions, dynamically adjust gameplay, and streamline content creation signals a new era in gaming, where AI becomes an integral part of both development and gameplay experiences.
