Epic Games has announced that they are expanding their strategy to encompass mobile platforms by launching the Epic Games Store on iOS and Android. This move aligns with their broader goal of providing a diverse range of mobile titles and fostering an open, developer-friendly ecosystem. The new mobile store aims to replicate the success of the Epic Games Store on PC, which has seen substantial growth since its inception.
This strategy is part of Epic’s ongoing efforts to challenge the status quo in the digital distribution landscape. The company plans to offer a robust selection of mobile apps and games, not only from Epic but also from third-party developers, thereby enriching the mobile gaming experience for users.
Epic Games Store Growth
This initiative follows a series of significant developments for the Epic Games Store. In 2023, the store saw remarkable growth, increasing its user base to over 270 million PC users and expanding its catalog to more than 2,900 titles. Key features introduced include improved launcher performance, self-publishing tools, and the Epic Rewards program, which offers incentives for purchases made on the platform. Additionally, the introduction of the Epic First Run program allows developers to retain 100% of their net revenue during the initial six months of exclusivity on the store.
The upcoming launch on iOS is facilitated by Epic Games Sweden AB, which will manage the operations in Europe. This expansion is enabled by the new Digital Markets Act, which has allowed Epic to secure an Apple Developer Account and start developing the store for iOS users. The store’s launch in Europe is set for 2024, aiming to provide a competitive alternative to the existing app store ecosystem.
Epic Games has stated that they are committed to enhancing the digital distribution environment for both developers and users by promoting transparency, reducing fees, and offering a wide range of quality games and applications. This strategic expansion into the mobile market reflects Epic’s dedication to creating a more equitable and dynamic gaming ecosystem.
